 2023 Preview 


       Carbon Hill finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Carbon Hill finished sixth in Class 3A region five with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Carbon Hill averaged scoring just 11.8 points a game. The Bulldogs also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 39.3 points a game.

       Since 2010, the Carbon Hill football program has struggled with a record of 29-102.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Carbon Hill has not won much with a record of 73-181. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 3A and 357th in the AHSAA.




       The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach D.J. Emerson as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Emerson spent the past two seasons as the head coach at Curry, where he was 2-18 overall.

       The Bulldogs are on coach number six since the 2013 football season.

       The Bulldogs will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just a single win last year, Carbon Hill will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

      QB Walker Kimbrell will be returning after completing 85 of 175 passes for 1,199 yards last season along with 9 touchdowns.

      The defense will be led by JP Burkett this season after collecting 90 total tackles last season.

       The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Decatur Heritage Christian on Friday, September 1 at G.W. Keith Stadium. Last year the Decatur Heritage Christian Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 1A region seven. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to Colbert Heights by a score of 20-13.

       Carbon Hill and Decatur Heritage Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 0-2-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2022 with Decatur Heritage Christian winning by a score of 26-16.
